Sermon Text

The apostle Paul has spent five and a half chapters painting a breathtaking picture of what God has done for us in Christ — our election, redemption, sealing with the Spirit, union with Christ, and calling as the church. And now, at the culmination of this magnificent letter, Paul turns to a topic that many of us would rather avoid: spiritual warfare.

'For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.' Paul wants us to understand that the Christian life is not a cruise — it's a battle. There is a real enemy who seeks to destroy our faith, divide our families, and undermine the work of the Gospel. And we must be prepared.

But notice — Paul does not call us to fight in our own strength. He says, 'Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.' Every piece of armor he describes is provided by God. The belt of truth. The breastplate of righteousness. The shoes of the Gospel of peace. The shield of faith. The helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And undergirding it all — prayer.

This armor is not merely defensive — the sword of the Spirit and the preparation of the Gospel are offensive weapons. We are not called to hide in a bunker and wait for the battle to end. We are called to advance — to proclaim truth, to stand on righteousness, to wield God's Word with courage, and to pray with fervent, Spirit-empowered persistence.

Young people, adults, seniors — every one of us is in this battle. The enemy targets your mind with deception, your heart with discouragement, and your relationships with division. But take heart: the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Put on the full armor of God, and stand firm.
