Sermon Text

Jesus is nearing the end of the most famous sermon ever preached — the Sermon on the Mount. He has covered the Beatitudes, the call to be salt and light, the deeper righteousness of the kingdom, prayer, fasting, money, worry, and judgment. And now, as He draws this monumental teaching to a close, He tells a simple story with an urgent point.

Two builders. Two houses. One storm. The wise man builds his house on the rock. The foolish man builds his on the sand. When the rains fall, the floods rise, and the winds blow, one house stands and one collapses. The difference is not in the storm — both men face the same storm. The difference is in the foundation.

What is the rock? Jesus tells us plainly: 'Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.' The foundation is not just hearing God's Word — it is obeying it. It is building our lives, our marriages, our families, our careers, and our decisions on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In our culture, we are tempted to build on all sorts of things: financial security, career achievement, cultural relevance, political power, even religious activity that lacks genuine obedience. These may look solid in fair weather, but when the storm comes — and the storm always comes — only the life built on Christ will stand.

The call of Jesus is not merely to listen and admire His teachings, but to live them out with courage and conviction. Let us be wise builders who anchor every dimension of our lives to the unshakeable rock of Jesus Christ and His eternal Word.
