Sermon Text

Psalm 13 is one of the shortest psalms in the Bible — just six verses — but it captures one of the deepest human experiences: the feeling that God has forgotten us. 'How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?' David cries out with raw, unfiltered honesty. And if we're honest, most of us have prayed something very similar.

There are seasons in life when heaven seems silent. When we pray and nothing seems to change. When we search for God's presence and feel only emptiness. When suffering stretches on and on without explanation or relief. These are the seasons that test our faith to its core. And David felt them too.

But notice the shape of this psalm. It begins with desperate questioning — 'How long?' — repeated four times in two verses. Then it moves to honest petition: 'Look on me and answer, LORD my God. Give light to my eyes.' David doesn't pretend everything is fine. He brings his pain to God with bold, broken-hearted honesty. And that, my friends, is faith.

And then something remarkable happens. Without any change in circumstances — without any answer from heaven — David makes a choice: 'But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.' This is not denial. This is not positive thinking. This is the deep-rooted faith of a man who has seen God's faithfulness enough times to trust Him even in the silence.

If you are in a season of silence today, know that you are in good company. The psalmists, the prophets, even Jesus on the cross cried out, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' God is not offended by your questions. He invites your honesty. And He promises that even when you cannot feel His presence, His unfailing love has not let you go.

Key Points

  • David brings his raw pain to God without pretense
  • Honest lament is an expression of faith, not a lack of faith
  • Trust in God's character can sustain us even without answers
  • God's unfailing love persists even when we cannot feel His presence
