Sermon Text

'Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.' Three short commands. Three words that summarize God's will for our emotional and spiritual lives: rejoice, pray, give thanks. And notice the qualifiers: always, continually, in all circumstances. Not just when things go well. Not just when we feel like it. Always.

Gratitude is not a personality trait — it is a discipline. It is a choice. And it is one of the most powerful spiritual practices available to the people of God. Research confirms what Scripture has always taught: grateful people are happier, healthier, more resilient, and more connected to others. But the biblical case for gratitude goes far deeper than psychology.

'Give thanks in all circumstances' is not a call to deny our pain or pretend everything is wonderful when it isn't. It is an invitation to trust in the sovereignty of God — to believe that He is at work even in the circumstances we would never choose. Gratitude in suffering is an act of radical faith. It says, 'God, I don't understand what You're doing, but I trust who You are.'

The discipline of gratitude reframes our perspective. Instead of fixating on what we lack, we see what we have. Instead of spiraling into anxiety, we remember God's faithfulness. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we count our own blessings. Gratitude is the antidote to entitlement, discontent, and self-pity.

This Thanksgiving, I challenge you to begin a practice of daily gratitude. Write down three things each day that you are thankful for. Start small — the warmth of coffee, the laughter of a child, the faithfulness of a friend, the beauty of a sunset. Over time, you will discover what the saints have always known: a thankful heart sees the hand of God everywhere.
