Sermon Text

On October 31, 1517, a young German monk named Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, setting in motion the Protestant Reformation — one of the most consequential events in human history. At the heart of Luther's protest was the recovery of a truth that had been obscured for centuries: justification by faith alone.

Paul writes in Romans 3: 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.' Every word in this sentence matters. ALL have sinned — no exceptions. Justified FREELY — it cannot be earned. By GRACE — it is a gift. Through the REDEMPTION in Christ Jesus — it was purchased at infinite cost.

Justification is a legal term. It means 'to declare righteous.' When God justifies a sinner, He does not make them morally perfect in an instant. He declares them righteous — their guilt is removed, their record is cleared, and the perfect righteousness of Christ is credited to their account. This is the great exchange: our sin laid on Christ, His righteousness given to us.

'Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.' Apart from works. Not by good deeds, religious rituals, moral effort, or church membership. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

This is the heart of the Gospel, friends. It is the message that set Luther free, that fueled the Reformation, and that continues to transform lives today. If you have been trying to earn God's approval through your own efforts, stop. Rest. Receive. The righteousness you need has already been provided — purchased by the blood of Christ and offered to you freely through faith.
