Sermon Text

The apostle Paul is writing to the Corinthians about a collection for the struggling believers in Jerusalem. But his words transcend the immediate context and lay out timeless principles of generous living that apply to every believer in every generation.

'Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.' Paul uses the language of agriculture to describe the spiritual economics of generosity. Giving is like sowing seed — and the harvest is proportional to the sowing. This is not a prosperity gospel; it is a generosity gospel. God rewards generous hearts.

'Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.' Three non-negotiables: giving should be intentional (decided in your heart), voluntary (not under compulsion), and joyful (cheerful). God is not interested in begrudging compliance. He delights in the giver whose heart overflows with gratitude and love.

'And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.' Notice the 'alls' — in ALL things, at ALL times, having ALL that you need. God's provision for the generous giver is comprehensive and unending. He gives us everything we need so that we can keep giving to others.

As we enter the season of Christmas and year-end giving, let us examine our hearts. Are we sowing generously or sparingly? Are we giving cheerfully or reluctantly? Are we trusting God as our provider or clinging to our resources out of fear? 'Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!' The greatest gift ever given was given generously, sacrificially, and joyfully. May our giving reflect His.
