Sermon Text

A new year. A fresh start. All around us, people are making resolutions — new diets, new habits, new goals. But most of us know from experience that willpower alone is not enough to produce lasting change. We need something far deeper than a resolution. We need a renovation — a renovation of the heart.

In Ezekiel 36, God speaks to a people whose hearts had grown cold and rebellious. Their sin had led to exile, devastation, and spiritual deadness. And yet, in the midst of their failure, God makes an extraordinary promise: 'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees.'

Notice three things about this promise. First, it is God's initiative — not ours. 'I will give... I will remove... I will put.' The transformation of the human heart is not a DIY project. It is a divine operation. We cannot change our own hearts any more than a patient can perform surgery on themselves. We need the Great Physician.

Second, the change is radical. God doesn't polish the old heart — He replaces it. The stony, stubborn, sin-hardened heart is taken out and a new heart of flesh — soft, responsive, alive — is put in its place. This is not self-improvement; it is supernatural rebirth.

Third, God gives us His Spirit to empower the new life. The indwelling Holy Spirit is not just a nice addition — He is the engine of transformation. He is the one who moves us to follow God's ways, who produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, and faithfulness in our lives. As we enter this new year, let us ask God not for a new resolution but for a new heart. He is faithful to give it.

Key Points

  • Lasting change requires heart renovation, not just resolutions
  • God's promise of a new heart is His initiative, not ours
  • The transformation is radical — replacement, not merely improvement
  • The Holy Spirit empowers us to live the new life God gives
  • Spiritual renewal begins with surrendering to God's transforming work
