Sermon Text

The day before, Jesus had performed one of His most famous miracles — feeding 5,000 men (plus women and children) with five loaves and two fish. The crowd was amazed. The next day, they come looking for Him again — not because they understood the miracle, but because they wanted more bread. They wanted another free meal.

Jesus sees right through their motives: 'Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.' The crowd wanted bread for the body. Jesus offered bread for the soul.

And then He makes His claim: 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.' This is not merely a metaphor. Jesus is claiming to be the essential sustenance of the human soul. Just as bread is necessary for physical life, Jesus is necessary for spiritual life. Without Him, we starve.

The world offers all sorts of bread — achievement, pleasure, possessions, power, popularity. And every one of them leaves us hungry again. Only Jesus satisfies. Only the Bread of Life fills the deepest hunger of the human heart — the hunger for meaning, for forgiveness, for love, for eternity.

Jesus concludes with a breathtaking promise: 'Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.' Come to the bread that satisfies. Come to the One who gives not temporary fullness but eternal life. Come to Jesus.
